A distraught warrior (the charismatic Jet Li) forces his toddler son to choose between a sword and a wooden horse. If he chooses the sword, together they will fight the corrupt government that killed their family; if he chooses the horse, the warrior will send him to join his mother–in hell. Thus begins The New Legend of Shaolin, a wild Hong Kong fantasy. Though the opening sounds grim, the movie shifts ahead seven years and becomes increasingly comic as its plot unfolds. The story centers around a map tattooed on the backs of five boys; it leads to treasure from the Ming dynasty that a heroic sect hopes to use to reestablish the Shaolin temple, which the government destroyed. Meanwhile, Li is forced by poverty to become the bodyguard of a

The brainy, paranoid science fiction of writer Philip K. Dick has inspired one visionary classic (Blade Runner) and two above-average action movies (Total Recall and Minority Report). Paycheck aspires to follow in their footsteps: An engineer (Ben Affleck, Chasing Amy) routinely agrees to have his memory erased after every job so that he doesn’t know what he’s done. But after the biggest job of his life, he discovers that not only has he refused a million paycheck, he’s sent himself an envelope full of things he doesn’t recognize–and he doesn’t remember doing any of this. As he unravels the plot, he discovers he’s also fallen in love (with Uma Thurman, Kill Bill) and invented a dangerous device for his former boss (Aaron Eckhart, Erin

The effortlessly charismatic Chow Yun-Fat stars in this excellent historical drama about the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. Yip Fai (Chow), a young man living with his aunt and hostile uncle, befriends a local tough named Kong (Alex Man). Fai wants to flee the city for Australia or America, but Kong is too attached to his home, as well as to the daughter of a local rice importer, Anna (Cecelia Yip). Passions shift among the three as the Japanese invade, creating a tortured world of collaborators, rebels, and black market thugs. Though Jackie Chan is billed as the star of The Prisoner, he’s actually part of a stellar ensemble cast including Sammo Hung (Dragons Forever, TV’s Martial Law), Andy Lau (Saviour of the Soul), and Tony Leung Ka-fai (The Lover). Leung plays a cop who goes undercover in a prison to dig out corruption; Hung is a roustabout prisoner who keeps breaking out to see his son; Chan plays a pool shark who accidentally kills a gambler; and Lau is that gambler’s mob boss brother who’s sworn to kill Chan. They all end up in the same prison, resulting in a complex, engrossing, and sometimes brutal story–think of it as the Hong Kong version of HBO’s Oz. Which is not to say it isn’t full of the bizarre narrative shifts that make Hong Kong movies such a pe

Bruce Lee wrote and directed Return of the Dragon, his third film, a mix of hard-edged kung fu and goofy humor. Once again he plays the country boy who travels to a foreign land, in this case Italy, where his restaurant-owning cousins face trouble from the local syndicate. Their strong-arm tactics have driven customers away and now threaten the family, but Lee refuses to buckle under their pressure and takes them on in a series of impressive confrontations. The film ends with a memorable showdown with world-champion karate artist Chuck Norris in the Roman Colosseum (though much of it is staged in a rather cheap studio set), a brutal, almost inhuman battle that revels in the intense punishment taken by the combatants. Norris is one of Lee’s

In between the Hollywood productions Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, Hong Kong’s most popular export, Jackie Chan, returned home to indulge his romantic side in this modern fairy tale. He plays a modern Prince Charming, a big business mogul and notoriously eligible big-city bachelor to dreamy teenager Shu Qi, a girl from a Taiwan fishing village. When a heartbreaking message in a bottle washes ashore, she traces it back to Hong Kong, where she meets Jackie in the midst of a mid-ocean brawl on a luxury yacht. Hong Kong heartthrob Tony Leung has a grand time spoofing his image, playing a gay fashion photographer who “adopts” Shu Qi and helps her woo her handsome dream lover. It’s a pleasant change to see 40-plus Jackie discard his usua

Long ago in China, corpses are supposed to be able to follow orders given by a leader and ‘jump’ to their respective burial place. However, some drug dealers use this method to smuggle opium. Things are going well until the local aristocrat, Miu Tin, murders a singer’s husband as he fails in attempting to rape her. He asks the corpse leader to take the body away. Then, another man is killed mysteriously. When the villagers try to go after the case, they find a strange corpse sucking in a huge snake in an old tower. Many people are killed as they try to get out in time. Those who manage to live run to locate Miu. He is afraid that he will be caught and is, therefore, ready to kill anyone to save his life.
